The first stop of our Getaway Saturday was Ripon in order visit the impressive Ripon Cathedral with its original Saxon crypt.

It was quite surprising to hear that Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Woderland, was inspired by the medieval woodcarvings that decorate the choir stalls. Furthermore, Ripon is quite small, however, it has been granted city status and maintained the unique hornblower tradition which can be traced back to the Middle Ages.

The second stop of our trip Saturday trip was Harrogate, a famous spa town in North Yorkshire. At the Royal Pump Museum, we got to know the rich history of Harrogate’s heyday as an exclusive spa town and after that some of us were even brave enough to try Harrogate’s spa water, which has a very strong sulphur taste and smell. Luckily, we even caught a glimpse of sunshine while enjoying the grand Valley Gardens in Harrogate afterwards. Later, we decided to simply buy some exquisite souvenirs for our nearest and dearest as the queue to enter traditional Betty’s tearoom was too long.

To sum up with the words of a student: “If I had not come today, I would have never gone to those great places myself”. We will see where next Getaway Saturday will take us.
